An Understanding

I don't want to be the one
standing opposite the knife-thrower.

I took this job with
the understanding
that I would be The One
high above the crowds--
the girl on the flying trapeze,
soaring like a bird of light
with splendor and ease
making everyone look up to see.

I thought I'd
have top billing,
do as I please.

But now I am the
frozen target
at center ring,
the knife-thrower's
sinister smile and
blade glaring at me.
