Bagh na Sidhe

Bagh na Sidhe
(Gaelic for Bay of Fairies)

Jenny Kirkpatrick

Smaller
than yours

My palm pressed against your palm
Walking to our beach
Atlantic waters court Irish coast

Laughing like a girl
instead of the new wife I am

Your eyes dissect an abandoned beach of rocks
and glory in what the faerie has rejected

Eager
Gathering
Weighing
Judging the sharpness of the edges

Your right index finger grasps the pointed end
Your thumb will provide the spin
Elbow back
and forward in one motion
returning it
Delaying its submersion with a
Skip
Skip
Skip

Less knowing,
But searching still
I stumble on stones
Finally palming an awkward one,
Too rigid, too bulky
My elbow springs back
but forgets how to gracefully push forward
Its immersion a faerie ring of concentric circles
halos
to protect it down below

Stones
Yours light
Mine heavy
Whipping through
Arching back
We return them to the faerie's palace

Prancing
across the ocean

Larger
than us
