The River
The RiverMary Davis |

The river, reflective sage,
Steers persistent snowshoes, etches frozen landscape,
Solidifies side embankments, gurgles below glacial cover,
Sustains…peaceful solace.
The river, well honed athlete,
Dashes past admiring banks, roars with unrest,
Dives over substantial boulders, spews forth frothy bubbles,
Paces…endurance runner.
The river, chilled desirous refreshment,
Ices small children, washes beads of sweat,
Beckons parched mule deer, satisfies stealthy lynx,
Quenches…thirsty needs.
The river, unhurried traveler,
Languishes through sediment, caresses bottom rock bed,
Traverses familiar terrain, nourishes the landscape,
Calms…seasoned voyager.
