Requirements

Send:

(1) a letter that addresses the following:

  • demographic information (school, grades, subjects you teach; ethnic, cultural, and linguistic diversity among the students you teach);
  • why, as a teacher of writing and as a writer, you are applying;
  • your success as a teacher of writing (you might include teaching awards, student evaluations, teaching observation reports, or any other artifacts that are sources of pride);
  • one or two of your best practices for teaching writing (what they are, how they improved students’ writing, why you consider them “best”);
  • any other information that profiles you as a successful teacher.

(2) a current resume.

Selection Process

Applications will be reviewed by the Director and Co-Directors. Those selected will be recognized as effective classroom teachers; represent ethnic, cultural, and linguistic diversity; be drawn from across the grade levels (K-16) and disciplines; teach in a variety of settings; and demonstrate commitment to their students and themselves as writers.

Following this initial acceptance, applicants may be invited to a personal interview, during which they will have opportunity to elaborate upon their application. Teachers selected for the Institute will then be notified with a phone call and letter. Teachers who are not selected for the Institute will be notified by letter.
